The History of Brackley Baptist Church

The Early Years:

In October 1970, with the help of Temple Baptist Church, Alconbury, (now known as "Stukeley Baptist Church"), near Huntington, several American service members and their families formed the First Southern Baptist Church at Middleton Stoney, Oxon. Four months later, ten families constituted ''Calvary Southern Baptist Church''.

Methodist Chapel, Lower Heyford

Under its first part-time pastor, Edwin Broadway, the church moved to the Methodist Chapel in Lower Heyford in 1972. Ron Hill later took over as part-time pastor for a brief period before Rev. R.T. Kendall was called in 1974 as the first Ordained Pastor.

After completing his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Regent's Park College, Oxford, Dr. Kendall was called as pastor of Westminster Chapel, London, where he succeeded the likes of Dr. G. Campbell Morgan and Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones.

In March 1977, Rev. Gary Hawkins, a former U.S. Navy Chaplain, became the minister.

During his ministry the church moved in May 1978 from Lower Heyford to the former Court House and Gaol (Jail) at Church Street, Bicester.

From May 1981 to June 1982 another Regent's Park graduate student, Phil Roberts, served as minister. He currently serves as President of the Midwest Baptist Theological Seminary.    (Left: Phil. Annia, & Naomi Roberts)
